The Early County Courthouse, also known as the Grand Ole Lady, was built in 1904 and added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 18, 1980. She is truly a sight to behold inside and out! The Lower Creeks ceded southwest Georgia to the Americans in a treaty that became law on December 15, 1818. Located nine miles southwest of Blakely, in Early County, the Coheelee Creek Covered Bridge is the southernmost covered bridge in the United States. It was built in 1891 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This Historically Significant Park Is The Oldest And Largest Woodland Indian Site In The Southeastern United States, Occupied By Indians From 350 To 750 A.D. Georgia’s Oldest Great Temple Mound, Standing 57 Feet High, Dominates Two Smaller Burial Mounds And Several Ceremonial Mounds. Kolomoki Mounds Is Also Known For Its Wide Range Of Outdoor Activities. Two Lakes Provide Fishing And Boating, And A Campground Is Nestled Under Hardwoods And Pines. Hikers Can Choose From Three Scenic Trails. The Spruce Pine Trail Offers Views Of Lakes Yahola And Kolomoki, While The Trillium Trail And White Oak Trail Meander Through The Forest. Children Will Enjoy The Playground, Pedal Boats And Miniature Golf. Many early settlements were formed on creeks with falls and they leave us with glimpses into days long gone. Some notables are Coheelee Creek Falls and Grimsley Mill Falls. Although many are on private land, their beauty can be observed from respective public roads. Unless land is clearly marked as public, do not enter. Trespassing on private land is illegal, fineable, and dangerous. With expansive tracts of woodlands, thousands of acres of agriculture and widespread application of Quality Deer Management programs, Blakely and Early County is a high quality deer hunting destination. Mural Artist, Wes Hardin, created this very personal view of the native Kolomoki Indians with a prominent father-son relationship. It displays the Kolomoki Mounds in the background. This mural is located on the exterior wall of the Early County Museum. Hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, water sports, golf, rodeo, the list goes on and on! You want outdoors adventure, you got it! Birdsong Peanuts employed Wes Hardin to paint a farmer using the technique of stacking peanuts as a salute to our agricultural heritage. A Confederate Flagpole, raised in April 1861 at the Early County Courthouse, still stands today. Encased in fiberglass for the 100th anniversary of the American Civil War, the flagpole, made of white pine, stands as a tribute to the Early County Confederate veterans who marched off to war as ordered by the State of Georgia. With its 5494 feet long and 98 feet wide runway, the Early County Airport (BIJ) can accommodate numerous types of aircraft. Just three nautical miles east of the city, its location makes for convenient business or pleasure visits. City, county, and private donors came together to restore a important piece of Blakely's history. The Alexander Building, on the beautiful Courthouse Square, is now home to the Chamber of Commerce and County Administration. The local chapter American Legion helps our citizens and visitors honor our fallen Early County servicemen and servicewomen on Memorial Day and Veterans Day with a magnificent display of flags and crosses marked with their names every year. This majestic view can be seen several times a year to include Memorial Day, Flag Day and Independence Day.
